Description

Nanocomposite materials have become an intense topic of research in recent years with some studies giving reports of greatly improved mechanical properties and others giving less promising results. Many factors affect the outcome of nanocomposite properties, from material processing to the interfacial properties between the nanofiller and the matrix. Molecular dynamics modeling of the nanocomposites in response to mechanical deformation under varying circumstances will provide insight into the mechanisms of strengthening and interaction of nanofillers, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene, with advancing crack tips. Fundamental research is required to develop models for military relevant nanocomposite materials and their response to mechanical deformation.
