Description
This research will involve analytical development for the detection of such emerging contaminants as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), fluorinated chemicals (such as PFOA and its precursors), and pharmaceuticals (prescribed and over-the-counter), as well as investigation of these compounds in municipal wastewater treatment (WWT) operations and receiving waters. There are fundamental gaps in knowledge concerning the environmental fate of these compounds of emerging concern.
Our goal is to (1) develop standardized analytical techniques and reliable extraction procedures, (2) elucidate the role of wastewater treatment systems on the environmental fate of emerging contaminants, and (3) characterize the mechanisms responsible for their transport and fate in the environment. Their precursors in treatment systems will be identified and explored to determine their potential for biotransformation and management in WWT sludge systems. The proposed work will assist EPA in performing a risk assessment of these compounds by examining the primary sources of these compounds to the environment.
