Description
With the advent of Multi-function Phased Array Radar (MPAR) technology, it is now possible to scan the same weather phenomenon using both adaptive scanning and faster volume update capabilities of the system. Studies conducted using both Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSE) and real data experiments show that faster scanning rate of MPAR may yield improvements in storm-scale forecasts from assimilating over a shorter assimilation window. The proposed research seeks to extend the initial findings and examine how to best assimilate the adaptive high temporal frequency MPAR observation into numerical weather prediction model with the goal to increase severe weather warning lead times (Warn-on-Forecast).
