Description

The control of complex systems requires robust, high-fidelity simulations of multiphysics problems often involving both structural mechanics and fluid dynamics. Developing reduced-order models for real-time control typically requires high-order methods which introduce computational burden for iterative solvers. To accelerate convergence of iterative methods, sophisticated preconditioners are required and efficient preconditioning strategies remains an active area of research. This research opportunity seeks a postdoctoral researcher with experience in high-order methods to further advance our computational capabilities for fundamental problems arising in aerothermodynamics and elasticity. Potential topics include efficient solvers for high-order discretizations of flexible bodies, the development of new high-order methods for compressible or incompressible fluid dynamics, and robust methods for elastic scattering. Applications may include flameholding within a ramjet/scramjet, aerodynamics for hypersonic vehicles, combustion, chemically-reacting flows in fuel-cells, flapping foil propulsion, and/or remote sensing. The ability to implement the developed methods using a compiled language and familiarity with commercial and open source (Ansys, COMSOL, SU2, etc.) or academic (FEniCS, Firedrake, etc.) finite element software is desired.
