Description
This research focuses on the development of quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (qNMR) techniques to improve solution-state measurement capabilities in the areas of environmental and clinical/nutritional science as well as pharmaceuticals and biomanufacturing. An emphasis is on the development of robust quantitative methodologies to accurately determine various levels of biological and chemical analytes in complex liquid-state matrices and to establishing the metrological traceability of such measurement processes. This quantitative NMR research effort can be combined with other supporting analytical techniques (GC-TOFMS, LC-MS/MS, vibrational spectroscopy). Novel quantitative methods for two-dimensional NMR applications (e.g., heteronuclear single quantum correlation [HSQC] methods) as well as chemometric methods for spectral processing may also be of interest. This interdisciplinary work is appropriate to those with expertise in fields such as biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, and materials science, and with expertise in various spectroscopy and analytical separation techniques.
Current facilities include a Bruker 600 MHz NMR spectrometer dedicated to quantitative research at the Gaithersburg MD site, with additional access to Bruker 700 MHz and 800 MHz spectrometers with cryoprobe capability at the Charleston SC NMR facility. In addition, the Charleston SC systems are equipped for use with LC-MS instrumentation for multidimensional measurement processes.
