Description

High finesse Fabry-Perot (FP) cavities provide the opportunity for acoustical measurements with a higher accuracy than any existing technology. The approach can provide not only higher accuracy, but also a more direct traceability path for acoustic devices and sensors, traceability to a quantum standard, and intrinsically-accurate acoustic sensors which require no calibration. As such, FP cavity techniques promise to revolutionize primary sound measurement. We have proposed the method (https://www.nist.gov/publications/optical-cavity-based-primary-sound-standard) and are in the early stages of demonstrating it. We are seeking a talented researcher to work with us to advance the methods and technology, and take acoustics into a new era! A candidate should have a background that includes experimental optomechanics or optics.
