Description
Most quantum information applications depend critically on single-photon devices such as single-photon sources, single-photon detectors, and single-photon processing components like switches. Even quantum information schemes using material qubits require single photons for interfacing between those qubits and the outside world. We are pursuing research to support and encourage the development of single-photon devices for quantum information applications. Research focuses on improved accuracy and convenience of single-photon on-demand sources, single-photon detectors, single-photon switches, and improved metrology of these devices. In addition to these fundamental components, we are also developing another critical technology-solid-state quantum memory. Possibilities include participation in any of these efforts. To illustrate the breadth of effort in just the area of sources, our efforts include sources relying on parametric down conversion in bulk and in waveguide crystals, four-wave mixing in optical fibers, Pr ions doped into a crystal matrix, and quantum dots. We encourage proposals in any of these areas.
