Description
This opportunity covers a range of research avenues focused on developing and increasing the use of chemometric techniques for the treatment of data relevant to forensic science disciplines. A need exists to gain a deeper understanding of instrument responses (i.e. mass spectral or spectroscopic data) obtained from samples such as street drugs, explosives, fire debris, trace evidence, or entomology in order to better classify and or differentiate questioned samples with known samples. The advancement of chemometric methods is of interest to forensic examinations to address issues such as prediction of drug class of unknown substances, interpretation of ignitable liquid signatures, or prediction of trace explosives degradation signatures. Development of chemometric techniques to address issues such as these will have wide ranging applicability not only to forensic science but also sectors such as homeland security, health care, environmental, and industry. Opportunities for collaboration with other NIST laboratories as well as local, state, and federal forensic laboratories exist. We are seeking independent, motivated individuals with backgrounds across the physical, engineering, chemical, electrical, and materials science disciplines to contribute to our collaborative, interdisciplinary projects.
