Description

Many interesting soft matter materials, such as colloidal solutions, hydrogels or protein formulations, may undergo dramatic structural changes under the influence of external stimuli, such as light, electric/magnetic field, temperature, shearing force, or pH values. Compared with the widely studied structure and dynamics of these systems at equilibrium conditions, the time dependent or transient structures of complex soft matter materials are significantly under explored, in particular at nanometer length scale. The information of the time dependent structural information is very important for many applications relying on non-equilibrium processes, such as light triggered chemical reaction to synthesize novel materials, the pH triggered drug release, electric field driven colloidal self-assembly, and shearing force induced structural deformation. We are interested in using neutron scattering tools, especially small angle neutron scattering (SANS), in conjunction with other lab techniques to investigate the structural changes at nanometer scale using the time-resolved neutron scattering methods on a wide range of soft matter materials.
