Description
Generation, control and detection of optical radiation either spectrally, temporally, or spatially is fundamental to optical technologies. Developing a versatile, manufacturable, and efficient platform for photon manipulation able to address a broad range of wavelengths, and able to do so actively through external transduction is a key goal of photonics. We are developing capabilities to address this by leveraging advances in integrated photonics, nonlinear optics and meta-photonics. This relies on advances in understanding nanoscale light-matter interactions, developing new materials for broad wavelength coverage, and nanofabrication in systems of heterogeneous materials. Our multi-dimensional effort guided by rigorous electromagnetic modelling, advanced nanofabrication and optical characterization aims to address some of these fundamental photonic challenges and aid the development of novel nanophotonic technologies. These efforts are expected to enable realization of accessible hybrid integrated nanophotonic devices and systems with novel mechanisms to generate, detect and manipulate light on chip, for classical and quantum information processing.
All projects involve development of new measurement methods for characterizing light-matter interaction at the nanoscale and on ultrafast time scales; and relies on fabrication of devices in the state-of-the-art NIST Gaithersburg NanoFab.
