Description

NIST researchers are working to refine positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) measurements to better understand carbon capture materials. PALS is a novel technique used to investigate voids or pores in many different materials and has previously shown promise for evaluating porosity in many materials. Many models for the performance of novel carbon capture materials rely on porosity as an input metric; however, direct measurement of porosity is challenging. PALS offers the potential to directly measure porosity for these materials in different environments. This research aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of PALS for this measurement in model carbon capture materials systems and coordinate with researchers using artificial intelligence to advance discovery and guide the synthesis of new materials. Well-qualified candidates may have experience in making and characterizing carbon capture materials such as metal-organic frameworks or carbon capture membranes.
