Description
Our research combines state-of-the-art regional arctic climate modeling, including sea and land ice, ocean, atmosphere, land hydrology and ecosystem to advance the knowledge and predictive capability of the Arctic climate change. We are investigating the diverse processes involved in physical and biochemical modification of water-masses, their communication between shelves and deep basins in the Arctic Ocean, and with the sub-polar seas. We are also focusing on understanding regional climate dynamics, including air-sea-ice interactions and their effects on and response to the global warming and its polar amplification. Results from numerical models at spatial and temporal scales ranging from 0 (1 km) to 0 (1000 km) and from 0 (1 hr) to decades are being used in combination with available in-situ and remote observations. Given the continued warming and summer sea ice cover decrease in the Arctic during the past decades, this research aims to have broader and long-term impacts by facilitating studies of the potential increased exploration of natural resources along the seasonally ice-free coasts and shelves, and of the use of northern sea routes from the Pacific Ocean to Europe. Such activities will change the strategic importance of the entire pan-Arctic region. This research aims to advance understanding and planning of current and future operational needs in support of the continued US commercial and tactical interests in the region.

Postdoctoral and Senior awardees will receive an appropriately higher stipend based on the number of years of experience past their PhD.

Additional Benefits
Relocation
Awardees who reside more than 50 miles from their host laboratory and remain on tenure for at least six months are eligible for paid relocation to within the vicinity of their host laboratory.
