Description

This position will contribute towards NRL efforts to develop next generation ocean forecasting models with advanced air-sea interaction physics that resolves surface waves, mixed layer turbulence and the wind-driven circulation within a single model. The high-fidelity modeling will be achieved by coupling the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method with two-equation turbulence models to resolve the turbulence distribution in the boundary layer and the wind forcing via Ekman transport. SPH is a meshless methodology which is better suited to exploit GPU advances in High Performance Computing (HPC) compared to legacy grid-based numerical methods. The position responsibilities would include developing wind-forcing parameterizations for wind waves and turbulence models in SPH and testing the new modeling capabilities with observations and against operational models such as HYCOM and WaveWatch III. The postdoc will have access to DoD HPC resources and will work in a team of ocean modeling experts. Priority will be given to applicants with previous HPC experience and strong interest in computational fluid dynamics and turbulence modeling.
