Description

Current research projects explore the following subjects: (1) the mechanisms by which toxic compounds acutely affect central putative neurotransmitter systems with regard to neurotransmitter levels and related enzymatic activity, the interaction between enzyme inhibition and neurotransmitter levels in various brain areas, and the effects of potential antidotal compounds on these parameters; and (2) the mechanisms of action of anticonvulsant and/or neuroprotectant drugs on seizure activity and neuropathology induced subsequent to chemical toxicity. The chemical toxicants of interest are organophosphorus anticholinesterases nerve agents.

These research projects involve electrophysiological, neuropharmacological, neurochemical, and neurotoxicological studies on central neurotransmission using EEG analysis procedures, in vivo microdialysis, high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection, colorimetric and spectrophotometric techniques, and functional observation battery behavioral assessment in rodents.
